Bertha’s, Bristol
Bertha’s holds a strong place in our hearts as the spot of our first dinner date. I, clearly with the goal of saving money to spend on Erin in other ways, booked our reservation through First Table. By no means is this a slight on their part, but perhaps I hadn’t anticipated just how empty a restaurant would be at 5pm on a Wednesday. However, we quickly agreed it was worth it for the 50% discount on our food, and boy was it good.
Erin opted for the Porking on Sunshine, a sausage and red onion pizza with a perfect hint of chilli coming through. I went for the Meat and Heat, seemingly an iteration of Britain’s most popular pizza at the moment, pepperoni and hot honey. The dough was light, the toppings were plentiful and the flavours working together seamlessly. Bertha’s is not attempting to reinvent the wheel but simply focuses on great quality ingredients and pairing them well together. Their specials are always inventive, their beers great and service lovely.
If you can grab a booking via First Table I would highly recommend as this is a great option for someone looking to eat great pizza on a budget. Even without, they are reasonably priced with your average pizza costing around £15.

Le Rigmarole, Paris
My handsome boyfriend and I somehow decided that the best way to test a three month long relationship was to book a trip to Paris, and I’m so glad we did. Paris was the perfect city for us, romantic, filled with great wine, and even better food. One of the many restaurants we visited was the infamous Le Rigmarole, a sister restaurant to Folderol, the natural wine and ice cream bar next door.
Starting off our evening with olive oil ice cream and a little natty chilled red, we eased our stomachs into what may have been the single best pizza of. my. life. We chose a white potato pizza, alongside a classic pepperoni. As the potato pizza came out first, we were immediately smitten, scoffing this little number down in a matter of minutes.
I do have to be honest here though, and say we were a little nervous that the pepperoni may not live up to our first. I can’t speak for Lando on this one so I’ll let him have his say here:
Unfortunately, our expectations were set beyond reach, the potato pizza really was in a league of its own. The pepperoni was tasty, a sweet spice coming from wonderfully sourced sausage but it just didn’t quite have the zing we were looking for. Maybe we’re being too critical, but when you’ve just eaten the best pizza of your entire existence mere moments before I think we can be forgiven for having high expectations about a pepperoni pizza.
Back to me, I think our concerns were valid. Although the pepperoni was delicious, perhaps as we were starting out our pizza journey together..
[‘together’ because Lando’s started long before I came into the picture, I really am the other woman in their relationship]
..we were hesitant to choose out of the box, swerving a seafood option on the menu that night, and we shouldn’t have.
Regardless, this will live forever in my memory as the best pizza I have eaten, not only because it truly was that good, but also because Lando and I had the privilege of loving each other, and discovering more about one another, in the best city on Earth.

Ria’s, Notting Hill
Ria’s is a different kettle of fish compared to the above. First and foremost it’s Detroit style. Scary stuff seeing as before our visit, we swore by neapolitan. That fear was quickly nullified when their pepperoni & soppressata pie was plonked down in front of us, accompanied by some delicious natural wine.
Holy. Fuck.
This was the first thought that entered my mind when I took my first bite. The slow cooked marinara is mind altering. The cheesy crust still sends me into a daze even now. The spicy soppressata with the hot honey just cut through everything perfectly. I honestly cannot speak more highly of this place.
The wines are great, all natural with some out of the box finds. If your in Notting Hill and needing a good bite and some great drinks I don’t think you can find better. It doesn’t harm having the Pelican a few doors down, either, for an after pizza pint.

Although we have eaten at numerous pizza restaurants, these are three that are particularly special to us. We hope you can try them and enjoy them as much as we did.
Hopefully this is just pizza pt.1!
See you soon x
